I studied art and design at the Art Institute of Tampa and have been involved with game development for 10 years. And pixel art doesn't require nearly as much detail as most other styles.My name is Christopher Mathes and I am an artist, musician, developer, and the creator of Moonrise Fall. Learning how to edit existing work may only take weeks, sometimes days. Learning to make all this stuff from scratch can take years. ![]() Free assets can be customized to suit your purposes. You just have to know how to use them correctly, which is where the Art 101 basics and general art tool knowledge comes in. If you have access to cheap or free assets, you can usually use those as a basis for your games graphics. Honestly, your cheapest option is to pick up some basics of artistic and visual design, grab an open-source graphics program, and start eyeballing the free graphical assets in the Asset store. And by then there's no more gravy train as far as hiring artists is concerned. After the first few times this happens, they start to get wise and will begin billing you by the hour for their effort. Inexperienced artists can often be persuaded to work way too many hours for way too little money. This isn't just because of their value, but because one of the first things an artist learns is how to bill for their time. The more experienced the artist, the more you will have to pay. You can either hire a less experienced artist on the cheap, a more experienced technical artist for quite a bit more money, or learn how to do at least some of this stuff yourself. While re-purposing other peoples art is possible to a certain extent, it does still need to be adapted to your title's individual style. At some point or another, you will need SOME manner of artist. If that still doesn't quite capture the style you want, you could also use a render-to-texture to more finely control the rendering frame-rate as well as the pixel resolution.Īny number of ways that you can go about this. Either use some 3D models with judicious color and shading choices to render some sprite sheets, or just take that 3D model and render it really small and low-resolution with anti-aliasing turned off. If you only have access to a 3D artist, but still want to go for a low-res pixel look, you can still achieve this. One of the most well-known examples of this is Donkey Kong Country, which used full 3D models to generate lower-resolution sprites. You can do something similar with vectors, if you know someone who prefers working in that format.Īnd of course, you can re-purpose 3D art for pixel work. Do a little bit of optimization and you're good. ![]() If you have someone with more traditional illustration techniques, you can have them do rough sketches and color-ins, and then scale those down to pixel-size yourself. If you don't, you can supplement that shortcoming with a different form of art. But not all of us have access to someone like that. Ideally, you would have a talented artist who has some experience working at lower resolutions. And like standard art, there are any number of ways of producing it. Pixel art is just standard computer-generated art, but at a lower resolution than is considered typically normal. ![]()
